Greetings all. I have just purchased an old (1960's) Hembrug 11' X 20' toolroom lathe.
I am looking for any written information on this machine-obviously a manual would be great, but anything at all will help, I'm sure. I'm not taking delivery until September, but would like to get a head start. Machine is fully optioned with both tailstocks, all collets with integral closer, 'infinitely' variable speed, taper turning, metric/imperial threading etc. Model number may be D1-S or similar. Brings me to a point of contention that I have seen time and time again - that the marks and scratches always line up with the grease grooves in these type of slides. Makes me wonder if when people lube this stuff, they bother to wipe the zerk fitting. Looks to me like the offending steel chip is getting pumped in with the lube.
I've spent a lifetime replacing way wipers, when really I should have been kicking a greaser in the a**! Old grease would be a problem as well, do yourself a favor and spend some time taking apart and cleaning away the old stuff and coating with new before start up. Had to laugh at the part about getting old. Laugh with you I mean, not at you. I plan to do a full strip search of this machine when I get it, cavities and all. Since it is my first lathe real lathe* I am going to take a little time to ensure that it is 'good to go' before commissioning it. Paint too, probably.
