Does anyone have any good tips for practising licks in a way that they come out in my playing? I am a fresh saxophonist of half a year, but i have a few years of jazz guitar skills so I know my theory and all that. So sax being my second instrument now I practise it a lot and want to be able to play the changes well. I'm working on Rhythm Changes, I'll Remember April, and My Funny Valentine mainly now. I don't know how to go about Blues Changes for example. But when I practise licks it seems I have to force them out, they don't 'appear' naturally. Do any of the veterans here have any tips to share about practising licks, internalizing them and making them your own?
I will take the other route. I always prefer to write things down. And if you search the web you can find the root progression, which is what I use to practice licks and phrases. Its an excercise that moves through intervals, and each note is the 'root' of your pattern. Its like up a,b,c,d,e,f,g, down a,g,f, eb,db,b,a, up a,c,eb,gb,a, down f, db, a, d,g,c,f,bb,eb,ab,db,gb,b,e,a, then sharp 11s chromatically, then fifths, and thats it.
You can use this for anything. The first thing I was told to do with it was to practice minor thirds over it.simple intervals get really cool for instance minor thirds played in the sharp 11 section gives you diminished arpeggios.and you start heariing a lot of opportunnities.. If you use this, it trains your ear to hear where different variations of your patters can be used, and you practice the lick in every key many times by the time you finish. This has worked great for me. I am not a professional musician, and I dont have time to transpose everything in my mind, I get 2 hours a day of practice if I'm lucky. But you have to figure out what works for you.

I think one thing that helps to understand is one lick doesnt give you good technique. Every lick you learn in every key is one step closer to being able to pull off one of your licks in a song. Play your licks in every key with a metronome very slowly.
I like to start at about 60 bpm. If you have been practicing one lick for a couple of weeks but you still have trouble playing it clean in a song its because you probably are lacking a good technical foundation. Play jazz and classical etudes to build your foundation. Play the etudes just like the licks, very slowly.
