Need souls to upgrade your soldiers? Head to the arena. Need gold or glory (tier 2 money)?
Play pvp, which is actually you vs the AI and the AI uses the other player's setup. Need gems (tier 1 money)? Complete tasks. All these parts of the game can give you these resources, but each mode gives its own boost. E.g., 10 souls per pvp match vs the same in the arena matches + abonus of 600 or more after 8 wins. I've had no trouble getting to level 145+ without paying.
(i did buy a few things, but they weren't necessary.) the devs do a decent job of offering new items in the store that can be purchased without real cash. Fun game to start with, but like most free to play games your progress will heavily slow down, requiring you to either pay for help or grind tediously slowly. PvP is practically forced on you at higher levels, and the computer AI there is so brutal (expect it to frequently get four, five, even a dozen turns in a row while you read a book and wait until you are allowed to take another turn) that you need a team so overwhelmingly powerful that you can overcome such nonsense.
Go in with that in mind. On the surface, this looks like a boring matching puzzle game, but does have a lot of depth in the game.
You build a team of 4, level them up and give them passive abilities to use their strong abilities during a match, and fight against the computer. Sadly there is no multiplayer, but you can fight other people, it's just the computer takes their deck and plays for them, meaning that they rarely choose the right play. The major problem with this game, however, is this real incentive to get a few very specific 'cards' to put on your team, and it's not the easiest thing to get them from chests. I've been playing for around 50 hours now and I've only opened a handful of legendary cards, and only 2 of them are considered playable. There's a real incentive to spend real cash on the game to open as many chests as possible, so it's pay to win with luck involved. And good luck getting 100% in this game, this is a real time grinder.
This is perhaps one of the most addictive games I've played. The story quests are interesting, battles are great! PVP matchmaking is terrible, I was around lvl 58 & it put me against a lvl 1000, mostly it would give me lvl 200 & above though. I'm past lvl 200 now so I don't mind so much.

Best value micro-transaction is 15 gems a day for 15 days, but if you don't log in daily, you lose out as they don't bank or stack. I recommend joining a Guild for great added bonuses. This really is an awesome game, especially for a freebee! There's a lot to do & learn & you'll have endless fun.
